Take a 5-minute break to breathe and sit in silence after every 25 minutes of work
The necessity of incorporating rest periods has been scientifically validated by Australian psychologists
Scientists have made a remarkable discovery: incorporating 5-minute breaks of focused breathing or silent reflection after every 25 minutes of work enhances concentration and boosts productivity. This well-known technique, commonly referred to as the “tomato method,” now gains scientific validation.
In the study conducted by Australian scientists, 72 students participated and were divided into three groups. Two groups took a 5-minute break after a 20-minute session. The first group engaged in silence, the second watched a video, while the third group studied arithmetic materials during the break. Following the activities, all students underwent a test. The results revealed that the first group, who had spent their break in silence, outperformed the other groups, achieving 60% correct answers.
The researchers emphasise that using the break to read social media or browse news is not an effective relaxation strategy. Instead, they recommend engaging in alternative activities, such as stepping away from the computer, practising breathing exercises, or simply sitting quietly alone to provide the brain with much-needed rest from work.
