Their scientists and engineers work to understand all aspects of the ocean and its connections to the Earth's atmosphere, land, ice, seafloor, and life, with the goal of advancing knowledge about the planet and guiding human stewardship of the environment. WHOI also trains future ocean science leaders, provides unbiased information for public policy, manages an endowment fund to support research and academic programs, and raises public awareness about the importance of the ocean.
