Description

Beta Fund is a $5 million fund that invests in small companies at the angel financing stage, prior to typical venture capital financing. They focus on the New England region, particularly the greater Boston area, which is known for its vibrant startup ecosystem. The fund believes that this early stage is when value grows fastest and good judgment and execution can make the biggest difference. They typically invest in rounds with 3-4 participants and have sponsored investments from groups like Cherrystone Angel Group and LaunchPad Venture Group. Some of their notable portfolio startups include InfoBionic, Kalion, and Content Raven. The fund has no specific preference for the number of founders in their portfolio startups and usually invests in companies that are 2-3 years old. While the fund has a lower exit rate compared to other organizations, they have been actively involved in 2-6 investment rounds annually, with a focus on deals in the range of $5-10 million. The fund was established by Dan Von Kohorn and currently has two critical employees.
