Patrick Chung
An established venture capital investor, Patrick Chung serves as managing general partner of Xfund. He launched his career with McKinsey & Company, where he focused on companies in the software and hardware sectors. Patrick Chung later joined the founding team at ZEFER, which provided internet services and was later acquired by NEC. At ZEFER, he helped the company grow its annual revenue to more than $100 million. Afterward, Chung began working at NEA, one of the largest venture capital firms in the country and was elected partner in less than three years. At NEA, he led investments in a number of notable companies, including 23andMe, Plaid, Segment, Zumper, and Philo. He continues to serve as a director of 23andMe and Philo. Xfund was founded as a partnership between several leading venture capital firms. Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the company primarily invests in business ideas coming out of Harvard, MIT, and other leading universities. Since its start, Xfund has had two offices in Cambridge and in Palo Alto, California. The company recently raised its third fund with a total of $120 million committed from investors. Through Xfund, Chung and his team focus on founders who are lateral thinkers, with ideas that transcend traditional industry boundaries. These ideas have the greatest chance of changing the world. Patrick Chung received his bachelor’s degree in environmental science from Harvard, where he won the John Harvard Scholarship for academic achievement. He also holds a joint JD-MBA from Harvard and earned honors for both degrees. As part of his studies, he developed a course on corporate governance with Robert C. Pozen, the former CEO of Fidelity Investments. The Academy of Achievement named Chung one of the world’s most outstanding graduate students. He also holds an MSc in environmental science from Oxford University, where he was a Commonwealth Scholar.
