With over 6600 sworn members and 800 civilian personnel, the PPD operates across more than 140 square miles and serves approximately 1.5 million residents. It is divided into twenty-two police districts, six police divisions, and two major command sections. The department has personnel assigned to 55 different locations throughout Philadelphia, with its headquarters located in the 6th Police District. The PPD has eleven different ranks, ranging from police officer to police commissioner. Established in 1797, it is the primary law enforcement agency responsible for maintaining public safety in Philadelphia.
