Founded in 1962, Broadwing Communications operates two divisions - one that offers data, internet, voice, and broadband transport services to carrier and enterprise customers, and another that designs and sells communications systems. The company shifted its focus to become primarily a provider of communications services in response to the downturn in the telecommunications industry. Broadwing Communications has undergone several name changes and acquisitions over the years, and in 2006, it was announced that the company would be acquired by Level 3 Communications.
