Peter Borden
Dr. Peter Borden is co-founder of Gridtential Energy, developing proprietary energy storage solutions. He advises companies on renewable energy product strategies, and serves on the energy advisory board of two venture capital funds. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Santa Clara University, where he teaches classes on photovoltaics and batteries, including “Energy Storage: Essential Component in Renewable Energy Solutions”. Dr. Borden pioneered cross-disciplinary battery research between Jasper Ridge, the School of Engineering, and the Department of Chemistry at Santa Clara University. Previously, with Applied Materials, he developed both silicon and thin film technologies in the Solar Business Group. He conceived, demonstrated and patented a process and equipment now being implemented for silicon solar cell manufacturing. Dr. Borden joined Applied in 2003 with its acquisition of Boxer Cross, a VC-backed company that he co-founded in 1997. There he developed metrology systems using DFM processes, which targeted IC manufacturing process control. Earlier he pioneered commercially successful in-situ particle monitoring systems for VLSI process equipment as the CTO and founder of High Yield Technology, acquired by Pacific Scientific. Earlier, at Varian Associates, he led the Photovoltaics Group, setting performance records with III-V and silicon concentrator cells and systems, sponsored by Sandia National Labs, NREL and the Air Force. Dr. Borden has over 80 publications and 68 patents. Dr. Borden holds PhD and MS degrees in Applied Physics from Stanford and BS degrees in Physics and EE from MIT, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
