Coffeco, a waste management company based in Patras, Western Greece, has developed a cost-effective process to extract phenolic compounds from coffee waste, offering a competitive advantage in the production of these beneficial substances. With an annual disposal of 30 thousand tons of coffee residues, Coffeco saw an opportunity to repurpose these waste materials, which already contain free and naturally sourced phenols. By collecting used coffee grounds from cafes and coffee shops, Coffeco creates skincare products and bioplastics, utilizing the natural antioxidants and caffeine found in coffee grounds. Their eco-friendly products have a lower CO2 footprint and provide sustainable alternatives to traditional options, contributing to their vision of transforming the food supply chain into a circular model.
