Chaz Pratt
Chaz joined Menlo Ventures in 2018, and focuses solely on early-stage investments. He runs Nexus, Menlo’s investing initiative conceived to birth idea-stage companies. In this capacity, Chaz spends time in the mindset of both investor and founder, and hence bares the hybrid role of Venture Founder. At Carnegie Mellon University, for which he has a tremendous love, Chaz’s deep passion for creating was given life. Half artist and half engineer, he finished CMU with a bachelor’s degree in both game design and computer science, and enough glassblowing skill to make a passable frilly bowl. CMU and CS set him on the express track to the world of tech: Seattle for a master’s in CS, Los Angeles for Insomniac Games and Blizzard, New York/Washington DC for Google, and finally Stanford for his MBA. Chaz’s shift to venture began in 2014 while founding the Google in Residence initiative in DC and teaching CS at Howard University. After two semesters, it became clear that, as the tools to build startups proliferate, hubs of intellectual capital like Howard would emerge as fertile ground for founders. He decided to double down on the talent and ambition of his students, and shift careers from engineering to investing. At Menlo, Chaz is seeking out founders from all backgrounds to help them find their own express trains, building great companies. Chaz grew up one of six in South Jersey. Hailing from a modest background taught him to savor the wins and see opportunities in places where few could. He loves all manner of respectful intellectual debate and just about every hobby that involves nature or building something. Right now, sewing, jewelry making, and surfing are his favorite pastimes. He counts himself lucky to be afforded a life full of unexpected adventure.
