Byron W. Smith
After receiving an MBA from the University of Chicago, Byron began his career at Procter & Gamble and Pepsico in brand management and classic packaged goods marketing. After 8 years in packaged goods marketing, Byron transitioned into tech. First came 5 years at GTE Wireless (now Verizon) with the last 2 running all sales, field marketing and advanced data products. Early in 1999, he left Verizon for AT&T, where he ran the Consumer Long Distance Business. Early 2000 he moved to Silicon Valley, where he was the EVP/GM and Chief Marketing Officer with Excite @ Home. In Silicon Valley Smith gained experience in media/content, and internet technology / infrastructure. Mr. Smith moved home to Tennessee in 2002 with Asurion as EVP / CMO (a small pre-public company working with the wireless industry where he had been on the Board of Advisors). Mr. Smith is a principal and co-founder of Limestone Fund, LLC. Recently he has also taught entrepreneurship as an adjunct professor at Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management and been an active angel and venture capital investor. Mr. Smith sits on the board at the MTSU Honors College Board of Visitors and The Trinity Forum. Mr. Smith serves on the boards of NuSirt Sciences, MedCenter Display, SwingPal, Value Payment Systems, and Streamweaver, a company he co-founded.

Mr. Singleton is a principal and co-founder of Mountain Group Capital. Mr. Singleton brings a wide range of experience to MGC and the companies MGC works with. Immediately prior to joining MGC, Mr. Singleton practiced corporate and securities law with the Trenam Kemker law firm in Tampa, Florida. With Trenam Kemker, Mr. Singleton advised public and private company clients in numerous merger and acquisition transactions in a variety of industries and ranging in value from under $1 million to nearly $700 million. Mr. Singleton also counseled businesses with respect to capital raising transactions, federal and state securities law compliance, executive compensation, employment law, and intellectual property. Mr. Singleton received a B.S. in Finance from the University of South Florida, and graduated cum laude from Stetson University College of Law, where he was an editor of the law review. Joe Cook has served as a director for Castle Biosciences since 2012, and was an advisor to the company from 2008 until becoming a director. He is a principal and co-founder of Mountain Group Capital. He is a founder and former Chairman of the Board of Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where he continues to serve as a Director. He also serves as a director of Corcept Therapeutics, Inc. Joseph Cook served as Chairman of Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from 1998 to 2009 and was Chief Executive Officer from 1998 to 2003. In 2009, Joseph Cook received the Pinnacle Award for Life Science Leadership from the Rady School of Management at the University of California at San Diego. Joseph Cook retired as a Group Vice President, Global Operations, of Eli Lilly and Company in 1993 after more than 28 years of service. During his career at Lilly he served in various senior executive positions, including manufacturing, engineering, finance, sales and marketing and general management. Joseph Cook took a leave of absence from Eli Lilly and Co. in 1976 to serve on the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. as a part of the President’s Executive Exchange Program. Joseph Cook serves as Chairman of the Board of Mercy Ministries International, Inc. He is also a former Chair and current member of the University of Tennessee College of Engineering Advisory Board. In 1999, Joseph Cook received the Nathan W. Dougherty Award from the University of Tennessee for distinguished service in the engineering profession. Joseph Cook also serves on the national board of the American Diabetes Association and is Chairman of the Board of Life Science Tennessee. He also serves as Chairman of Diabetes Care Group and on the Board of Clinical Products. He was a co-founder and serves on the boards of Device Innovation Group and Diagnovus. Joseph Cook graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1965 where he received a BS in Engineering with High Honors and was a U.T. Torchbearer.

Prior to his involvement with MGC, Mr. Cook was a Director, Private Placements in the Investment Banking Group of Robert W. Baird & Co. in Nashville from January 2001 through February 2003. Mr. Cook, as head of Baird’s private placement group, was responsible for the private placement of equity and debt securities for both private and public companies. During these two years, Mr. Cook helped originate and led the team executing nine transactions raising almost $400 million. Previously, Mr. Cook was a Vice President in the Investment Banking Group at J.C. Bradford & Co. in Nashville. He joined Bradford in July 1993 as a financial analyst, working on initial and secondary public equity offerings, public debt offerings, mergers and acquisitions, and business valuations. From December 1995 through June 2000, he specialized in private finance, including leveraged buyouts and private debt and equity placements. Mr. Cook is past Chairman and board member of the Martha O’Bryan Center, and was a founding board member of Ten Thousand Villages of Nashville. Mr. Cook graduated with a B.A. in Economics from Davidson College, and moved to Nashville, TN in 1993. Mr. Cook co-founded Diagnovus and Device Innovation Group and sits on the boards of Pathfinder Therapeutics, VenX Medical, Industrial Ceramic Solutions, and DPS Healthcare. Via visitation rights he also actively participates on the boards of ABT Molecular Imaging and OnFocus Healthcare.
