Founded in 2021 and headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii, WaiHome is tackling the issue of outdated cesspools polluting groundwater and contributing to the degradation of coastal ecosystems in Hawaii. With an estimated 88,000 cesspools still in operation, the state has banned their use beyond 2050. However, the cost of upgrading to the current onsite treatment standard is prohibitive for over 90% of Hawaiian homeowners. WaiHome has recently been awarded a Small Business Innovation and Research Grant from the National Science Foundation to investigate the use of algal photobioreactors for passive onsite wastewater treatment and reuse. The company is focused on providing smart, simple, and cost-efficient wastewater treatment solutions to address this critical issue.
