Georges Charpak

Georges Charpak was born in 1924 in Dabrovica, Poland, and became a French citizen in 1946. He studied in Montpellier and Paris. In 1946 he received his BSc in Engineering. He holds a PhD in Physics (including experimental research in nuclear physics) from the Collège de France. Georges worked at the CNRS from 1948 to 1959, before moving to CERN in Geneva. In 1984 he was awarded the Joliot-Curie Professor at the Ecole Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie of Paris. In 1992 Georges Charpak was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for the development of particle detectors, specializing in the multiwire proportional chamber, an elegant and economical solution to a complex problem. His pioneering work came in 1968, when he realized the importance of connecting the detector directly to a computer, enabling researchers to record the trajectories of particles with great accuracy and in much larger numbers compared with previous techniques.

This post involved the development of ultrasound research in core ultrasound beamforming technology and new business development for ultrasound. From 1996 to 2002, he was senior scientist at Philips Research France. His research interests included ultrasound vascular applications and elastography for the breast. He led a multinational research project on breast ultrasound from 1999 to 2002 and launched several clinical investigations for new imaging protocols at various sites in France and the United States. Claude received an electrical engineering and computer science degree from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de l'Electronique et de ses Applications in 1992. He graduated in 1992 from the Orsay University, Paris with a Masters degree in signal and image processing. He then specialized in medical imaging and biomedical engineering at the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, Canada, and worked on Electrical Impedance Tomography with an application for lung emphysema detection. He then graduated with a second Masters degree in 1994 and started as a research assistant with Electricite de France to develop innovative algorithms on Eddy current tomography for non destructive testing. Claude Cohen-Bacrie is the recipient of 10 patents in the field of medical imaging and makes regular contributions to key scientific conferences in the field of ultrasound.
