Joel Cutler

Joel Cutler is the Co-Founder and Managing Director at General Catalyst Partners. Prior to co-founding General Catalyst Partners, Joel (together with David Fialkow) co-founded and operated numerous businesses focused on leveraging technology and high standards of customer care for the travel, information services, specialty retail, consumer direct marketing, and payment processing industries. These businesses included: National Leisure Group, one of the largest leisure travel technology and distribution companies in the U.S.; Retail Growth ATM Systems (sold to PNC Bank), a national ATM and interactive network provider; and Starboard Cruise Services (sold to LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Inc.), the operator of more than 300 duty-free retail stores on 100 cruise ships and owner of the Miami and Ft. Lauderdale Airport duty-free stores, where Joel served as Chairman and CEO. As a Managing Director and Co-Founder of General Catalyst Partners, Joel invests in both new and existing technology businesses. Joel's areas of special interest include all aspects of information technology products and services, consumer internet/mobile, e-commerce and online travel. Joel’s selected investments include AirBnB, Blade Networks, Cadre, Chloe + Isabel, Couchsurfing, Evolv Technology, Fancy, Handybook, Oscar Insurance, Reinvent Commerce, Room 77, Sabre, Trover, Veloce, Viajanet, Warby Parker and Wildcard. Joel's past investments include GroupMe (acquired by Skype in August 2011), ITA Software (acquired by Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) in April 2011), GameLogic (acquired by Scientific Games Corp. (NASDAQ: SGMS) in August 2010), Jumptap (acquired by Millennial Media (NYSE: MM) in November 2013), (KAYAK (acquired by Priceline.com Inc (NASDAQ: PCLN) in May 2013), OLX (acquired by Naspers Limited (JSE: NPN) in August 2010), Reveal Imaging (acquired by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) (NYSE: SAI) in August 2010) and Venmo (acquired by Braintree in August 2012, which was acquired by eBay in September 2013). He is based in the firm’s Cambridge office. Joel also serves on the boards at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Children’s Hospital Boston, Former Board Member of The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, Former Board Member of Buckingham, Browne and Nichols School, Overseer of The Boys & Girls Club of Boston, Overseer at Colby College. Joel is a graduate of Colby College and Boston College Law School.
