UK authorities outline seven principles for AI developers
The British antitrust regulator crafts a code of ethics for neural network creators to promote fairness
The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) presented a list of principles that developers of artificial intelligence systems must follow:
- Ensure neural networks bear responsibility for the information they provide to consumers.
- Promote accessibility to AI training resources, including chips and databases, without imposing unreasonable restrictions.
- Encourage diverse business models within the AI industry.
- Allow businesses the flexibility to choose how they utilise AI systems.
- Support the ease of transitioning between different AI models.
- Uphold ethical standards to prevent anti-competitive behaviour, such as the forced imposition of products and services.
- Enhance transparency regarding the risks associated with AI utilisation.
The antimonopoly regulator based its rules on the work of popular AI systems like GPT-4 from OpenAI and Llama 2 from Meta.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) representatives highlight the lack of competition in today’s AI market. They believe that mainstream AI models could open the doors for more companies to succeed, potentially challenging current market leaders. This increased competition and innovation have the potential to boost overall economic growth and productivity, as stated by the report’s authors.
The UK government’s commitment to transforming the nation into a global AI hub is evident through a £100 million investment in AI development and the establishment of numerous scholarships.
