Two individuals in Florida stole more than $1 million from Uber Eats

Fraudsters employed credit cards from food delivery services in their illicit activities

Uber Eats, the food delivery service, uncovered that more than $1 million was illicitly taken by two Florida residents within an 18-month period.

In January 2022, individuals behind the scheme devised fictitious profiles for both couriers and customers within the app. Exploiting the fact that Uber Eats rewards its delivery drivers with a $700 credit card, the fraudsters orchestrated a scheme.

Once the fraudulent courier obtained the credit card, the accomplice posing as a customer would cancel the order. Subsequently, the “courier” converted the credit into gift cards at external retailers. According to law enforcement, the criminals targeted 27 Walgreens stores throughout the state.

The accused now confront charges related to orchestrating a large-scale fraud scheme and grand theft. The company expressed gratitude to Florida law enforcement for their investigation, emphasising Uber’s commitment to continually invest in robust anti-fraud systems and technology.
