Emojis in corporate communications actually help you understand your counterpart
Research revealed why people love to use emojis in work messages
According to data from a recent research, conducted by Duolingo and Slack, that surveyed 9,400 employees globally, the majority of respondents believe that using emojis helps them convey more nuances with fewer words.
In the same study, 55% of the respondents believed that emoji usage quickened the pace of communication in the workplace. Moreover, two thirds of the respondents noted that they felt closer to communicating with their colleagues who understood the meaning of the emojis they were using.
Reflecting on these data points, it is possible to conclude that emojis constitute an important part of workplace communication. Therefore, here are three tips on how to integrate more emojis in your daily communication:
1. Less talking, more symbols
Emojis are a convenient way to say things more efficiently. After the beginning of the pandemic, people noticed that there was a massive spike in the usage of the ‘heart’ emoji. The symbol was used to show support and express empathy in situations when words did not prove sufficient. Moreover, on a day-to-day basis, emojis can replace such phrases as ‘task completed’, ‘task checked’ and so forth.
2. Master the language
While misunderstandings can happen in verbal communication, emojis are even more prone to misunderstandings, therefore be sure to know the meaning of the symbols you use. A good place to start is by avoiding the usage of anything that includes a tongue/ lips / eggplants.
3. Everybody was once a beginner
The same survey data suggests that, among the US employees surveyed, 71% mentioned that they found the colleagues that do not use any emojis in their communication to be more reserved.
