Turkey plans to introduce the ‘residency tax’ for tourists

A levy of 2% on all services will be imposed

Turkey will impose a 2% tax on all services starting 1 January 2023 including lodging, provided on the grounds of hotels, resorts, apart-hotels, guest homes, and other institutions providing lodging.

The details of how it will be implemented and applied to visitors still is unknown, particularly how organised tourists arrive as part of package trips. For them it may be covered by the tour’s overall price.

Turkey had previously planned to enact this tax in 2019, but it was repeatedly delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic and a general decrease in travel and tourism. The implementation of new taxes for tourists was motivated by the fact that this year tourism recovered at a fast rate in the Mediterranean region.
