Everything Harry Potter touches turns to magic – even mobile game revenues
Harry Potter themed apps brought the returns of over $1 billion
Latest store intelligence data collected by Sensor Tower, the leading source of enterprise-grade market intelligence in the mobile app ecosystem, revealed that mobile games that have been based on the Harry Potter intellectual property (IP) have jointly generated more than $1 billion in App Store and Google Play, from all of the player spending combined.
In a descending order, the top grosser is “Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery” from Jam City. It is a game in which players can create their own character and experience life as a Hogwarts student and investigate various mysteries. This game was launched in 2018 and since then it has earned more than $400 million.
Next in order is “Harry Potter: Magic Awakened”, which was created by NetEase. It is an all-new immersive collectible card game (CCG) with massively multiplayer online (MMO) and role-playing game (RPG) elements. The game pocketed approximately $358 million, most of its revenue coming from China.
The third lucky Potter-ite is the Zynga-developed “Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells”. The game provides a branded version of the gamer classics – match-3 and candy crush. The game earned more than $218 million.
The first book “Philosopher’s stone” from the original Harry Potter book series was published in 1997 and, since then, the franchise has become an entertainment miracle spawning a series of sequels, films, attractions and video games. Of course, not all games bearing the Harry Potter name reap profits, but one thing is clear – all those that do reap profits, bear the magical name.
