Some models of BMW can be unlocked via Pixels, Galaxy and Apple devices

Apple iPhone users running iOS 16.1 can now share car keys in their Wallet with non-iPhone users starting with Google Pixel smartphones. Apple claims the capability will be accessible on additional smartphones running Android version 12 or higher.

Apple, the Internet Engineering Task Force and business partners have all worked together to create a standard for sharing digital keys among various platforms. Email, text messaging, and WhatsApp can all be used to send shared keys.

When Apple introduced digital auto keys in 2020, iPhone users were able to exchange their keys using iMessage and Apple’s instant messaging.

Key sharing only works on vehicles that can recognise digital car keys. Instead of giving a list of compatible vehicles, Apple told customers to get in touch with the manufacturer or dealership of their car. Several BMW cars from 2021 and 2022 model years can be unlocked and operated using digital car keys on iPhones, Google Pixels, and Samsung Galaxy headsets.

The 2022 Kia Niro, 2022 Genesis G90, and 2022 Genesis GV60 all recently got Google and Apple smart vehicle keys.

Smart vehicle keys are one of Apple’s many inventions that let consumers carry less items. One of the most well-known examples is the company’s Apple Pay service, which syncs a user’s credit, debit or prepaid card to their phone. In some areas, iPhone users can save their ID cards or driver’s licence in their Wallet, and at some Hyatt hotels, customers can use a digital key to unlock their rooms.
