Artificial intelligence learnt how to play football, and it’s getting better
DeepMind engineers’ created AI robots that can play football

A division of Google dedicated to artificial intelligence has trained AI humanoids to play football in a team. This comes from an attempt to increase coordination amongst AI systems and provide new avenues toward developing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) on par with human intelligence, researchers physically stimulated AI to play two-vs-two games.
Separate simulations demonstrated how the humanoids learned to use their arms for difficult tasks like tossing and catching a ball. The DeepMind researchers were able to teach humanoid and dog robots to walk and dribble a football in a natural way using insights from the digital world.
Football-specific movements were emulated by AI. The challenge required coordination with other AIs, motor control, and long-horizon decision making. The end product is a team of coordinated humanoid football players that display sophisticated behaviour at various scales.
