Chinese firms are rapidly narrowing the gap with the US in AI tech development
China and the US together represent 80% of the total large language models released

Over the past three years, Chinese companies have introduced 79 large language models (LLMs), neural networks trained on vast amounts of text data. Prominent examples include OpenAI’s GPT-3 and GPT-4 chatbots.
China is actively accelerating the development of artificial intelligence technologies. In 2020, local companies released only two LLMs, but by 2022, the number surged to 28. So far this year, China has developed 19 LLMs, surpassing the United States’ count of 18.
Analysts assert that China and the United States dominate the global production of language models, accounting for more than 80% of the total output.
However, developers face challenges in accessing semiconductors required for LLM training, as US authorities impose restrictions on their export. Nonetheless, Chinese IT giants like Alibaba and Baidu are following the footsteps of American company OpenAI by launching their own chatbots.
