Developer of magic avatars Lensa AI leads the app charts

Eight of the top 100 most downloaded apps on the US app stores in the first weeks of December were AI art apps

Lensa, the well known photo and editing app, developed a new ‘magic avatars’ feature that allows users to style their selfies into representations of themselves as sci-fi, anime or fantasy characters among other artistic rendering. The app recently went viral by using the open source Stable Diffusion strategy.

Consumer demand for the app and AI editing in general has now led to the entry of numerous additional ‘AI’ apps into the US app store’s top charts. AI picture editors have held the top three spots in the US app store, and other AI art apps are already charting in the Top 100.

The most popular app in the US app store is still Lensa AI which has 12.6 million global instals in the first days of December. Compared to the 1.8 million instals it received in a comparable timeframe in November, this is a 600% increase. Around 3.6 million of those new December downloads came from the United States.

The most downloaded apps are AI related. The generic-sounding app ‘AI Art: AI Image Generator’ promotes AI avatars and art from text, and it’s second to Lensa AI.  The third spot goes to ‘Dawn – AI Avatars’, which provides text based AI avatar customisation services.

Between December 1 and 11, over 1.7 million instalments of AI Art were made globally, an increase of 229% from the 71,000 instalments. Dawn was downloaded over 1.7 million times.
