Google continues its march across Asia and opens its first data centre in Japan

The Japanese data centre will see an investment of $730 million by 2024

Last week, Google announced that it plans to open its first data centre in Japan by 2023. This would become Google’s third Asia hub, following places such as Singapore and Taiwan.

The data centre is said to be located in Inzai City, Chiba, belonging to a wider infrastructure expansion fund that aims to invest up to $730 million by 2024.

According to the company, the purpose of the project is to provide “people with faster, more reliable access to our tools and services, support economic activity and jobs, and connect Japan to the rest of the global digital economy.” The company already has cloud regions in Tokyo and Osaka that provide storage and infrastructure services for local businesses.

Thus far, Google has partnered with colocation facilities providers like Equinix to power these regions for Google Cloud customers. Building its own proprietary data service will enable the company to conduct all of these services internally.
