Italian startup figured out how to produce sustainable vinyl records

Greenyl to produce records made from recycled plastic

Greenyl, an innovative Italian startup, has introduced a revolutionary solution in the music industry by launching the production of eco-friendly records that eliminate the use of hazardous polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic.

The company proudly states that 80% of their Greenyl records are manufactured using solar panels, while 99% of the materials used are certified recycled plastic. These “green” records are priced at approximately €25-30 per unit.

According to experts, around 180 million records were released worldwide last year. To mitigate the environmental impact caused by such a substantial volume of records, it would be feasible to plant six million trees.

Recent reports have highlighted a remarkable shift in the music market, with the demand for vinyl records surpassing that of CDs in both the US and the UK for the first time since 1987.

This resurgence in interest has been steadily growing for the past 16 years, with records accounting for 71% of physical music purchases in 2022 alone.
