Sony delivers a new modular wireless speaker that makes theatre owners envious

Sony’s latest consumer technology venture arrives in the shape of a modular wireless speaker system, called the HT-AX7. The HT-AX7 functions as a set of three speakers. The elongated base operates as the front speaker, while the detachable circular pair positioned on top act as the left and right rear speakers. By connecting it to a tablet, you can instantly enjoy an encompassing surround sound experience.

Arrange the various components around your space, and the system automatically analyses the placement to determine the ideal sound distribution. Typically, algorithms of this nature can be hit or miss, but Sony has a proven history of success in this area.

Sony claims that their proprietary 3D audio technology, known as 360 Spatial Sound Mapping, combines the sound wavefronts produced by three speakers and generates multiple virtual sound sources, effectively creating a three-dimensional soundscape that envelops the listener. No special requirements are needed, such as ceiling-mounted speakers; you can simply place three speakers around you to experience immersive 3D sound from any location.
