Musk is being investigated for his claims regarding Tesla’s self-driving abilities
Rumour has it that Tesla’s 2016 self-driving video was fake
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched an investigation on Elon Musk, the CEO of the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla, regarding his claims about Tesla’s self-driving abilities.
The SEC is attempting to determine whether Tesla has run afoul of its rules in promoting its FSD (full self-driving) and Autopilot offering. While the SEC abstains from providing any additional information on the case, a senior engineer on the Tesla team working on its Autopilot software claims that the video Tesla launched earlier in 2016 showing the car’s self-driving ability was in fact staged.
The Securities and Exchange Commission isn’t directly responsible for monitoring security concerns, however, it is responsible for monitoring any potentially misleading information regarding publicly traded companies.
Musk holds a track record for providing dubious information regarding the timeline of driver-free navigation capabilities, therefore the SEC decided to take notice. Based on the outcome of the investigation, Musk could end up with lawsuits or other consequences, including limitations on his future activity as an officer of a public company.
