Netflix reveals its true face: beware freeloaders and altruists
The streaming service begins a global crack-down on password-sharers

After a delayed launch, Netflix, the US-based movie streaming service, has finally begun its crackdown on password sharing among its global users. Initially intended to be introduced as “paid sharing” to US subscribers in the first quarter of this year, Netflix postponed the launch to the summer due to cancellations observed in markets where the changes were already implemented.
As per the updated guidelines, US subscribers will be required to either remove individuals from their Netflix account or pay an extra $7.99 per month for an additional membership for those residing outside their primary household. The same changes will apply to users in other markets internationally, beginning as early as the coming weeks.
The company provides resources to facilitate this transition, such as a feature that enables existing subscribers to see the devices logged into their account and remove any unauthorised ones. Additionally, they offer tools for password resetting.
Individuals who are sharing another person’s Netflix account have the option to switch to their own account using a “Transfer Profile” feature. This functionality assists them in transferring their current account details, such as viewing history and watchlist, to their new account.
Although the feature has faced significant criticism from consumers, Netflix has reassured its investors that despite some initial cancellations, it expects the password enforcement measures to contribute positively to its long-term business growth and financial well-being.
Initially, Netflix conducted trials of this feature in Latin American markets before gradually extending its availability to Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain earlier this year. With the current launch, the feature will now be accessible in a wider range of global markets, including Brazil, Bolivia, Belize, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, the Philippines, Malaysia, Israel, Thailand, Taiwan, Switzerland, Sweden, and various others.
