PhotoRoom editing app raises the bar for deep learning and bags new funds

The French startup helping small vendors make better photos of their products raised $19 million in Series A

PhotoRoom is a French photo editing app that was founded by Matthieu Rouif and Eliot Andres. The app has instantaneously earned the support of small businesses around the world as it helps them to better position their products online.

PhotoRoom is intended specifically for e-commerce vendors as its main feature is allowing users to remove background behind objects, so as to make the images have a more professional look.

PhotoRoom just concluded its Series A fundraising round with $19 million. The round was led by Balderton Capital, with participation of angels from Facebook, Hugging Face and Disney+. The existing investor Adjacent is also providing continuous investment to the company.

While PhotoRoom’s background-removing capacity isn’t exactly a novelty (with likes to Pixelcut, as well as Picsart), the company’s success lies in its ingenious selection of target audience – online vendors, particularly those reselling items on eBay, Poshmark or Depop. PhotoRoom’s features allow vendors to instantaneously edit product photos and post them on the platform, thus saving significant time and financial resources.

However, don’t be fooled by the ease of the app. Behind the scenes, people working at PhotoRoom are continuously improving the app’s deep learning capabilities that enable it to distinguish between objects in the front and in the background.

PhotoRoom also has an extensive library of readily available background images. The company has already collected 40 million downloads on iOS and Android.
