Kenyan tourism-focused startup studio raised $1 million to modernise the country's tourism sector

Purple Elephant Ventures (PEV), a Kenyan venture studio with a focus on tourism, has recently concluded its pre-seed fundraising round with approximately $1 million in the bag.

The purpose of the venture is to build the next generation of startups that use technology to modernise the tourism sector. More specifically, the aim is to build four new startups geared towards tourism, ecology and climate every year.

The fundraising round was led by Klister Credit Corp., a Canadian investment firm, The Untours Foundation, and a number of angel backers.

PEV was founded in early 2020 by Ben Peterson, Mikul Shah, and Jan van der Does de Willebois.

Rather than being depressed by the Covid-brought devastation, the startup decided to use that time in a productive manner. As a result, it launched two tourism-related startups — the software-as-a-service Elephant Bookings and content-to-commerce magazine Nomad.Africa.
