Tesla unveiled its newest artificial intelligence humanoid with thumbs

A prototype robot waved its hands to showcase Tesla’s advancing production

Elon Musk displayed a humanoid robot prototype that could walk and wave its hand to illustrate the strides Tesla Inc. has made in artificial intelligence.

Musk also displayed a video of the robot picking up boxes and navigating through a simulated office building to water the plants. Musk says the robot can perform a lot more than publicly demonstrated.

Tesla’s newest version of Optimus, a second robot, also made an appearance on stage. Although Optimus wasn’t quite ready to walk, it has opposable thumbs and can carry out duties.

They want to build a viable humanoid robot as soon as possible. Optimus is planned to be a very capable robot built in very high capacity, potentially millions of units at some point, and is expected to cost far less than a car.

Several engineers gave extremely technical lectures at the event, which was held at a Tesla factory in Palo Alto, California, describing how the robot interprets its surroundings.

Near the end of the three-hour event, Musk was tweeting through his employee’s presentations that he is eager to see what Optimus will become.

Tesla’s facility in Fremont, California, where the footage of the robot in action was shot, will be used to test the robot.
