Volkswagen Group launches in-car app store with TikTok and other apps

The app store will be available on some new Audi models this year and will later expand to other Volkswagen brands

The Volkswagen Group is entering the in-car app market with an extensive lineup of well-known third-party apps that have been modified for use in cars. This move is part of the conglomerate’s plan to create a centralised in-car software platform that will control how its vehicles function for years to come.

The app store will debut this summer in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Europe, starting with some new Audi models and expanding to other brands like Porsche, Lamborghini, and Bentley.

Popular apps like TikTok, Spotify, Yelp, and others will be part of the initial release, all tailored for in-car use and made to function from an infotainment system screen.

The launch of the Volkswagen Group’s app store contributes to the trend of smartphone-like experiences in automobiles. Mercedes-Benz also recently announced its plan to include built-in apps for TikTok, Zoom, and other services in the 2024 E-Class.

The apps available in Volkswagen Group’s app store cover a wide range of topics, including music and podcasts, video conferencing, weather, parking, EV charging, games, news, and integration with smart homes.

The potential release date for the app store in other markets is currently unknown.
